New Toyota Supra Concept first look – heading for Detroit 2014
A new Toyota Supra is something Toyota were planning before the world’s economy jumped off a cliff in 2008, but with the world running out of money – and fripperies like sports cars low on the priority list – Toyota swerved away from its plans to launch a new Supra. But the world has moved on since 2008, and Toyota have got increasingly bullish about performance cars in the last year or two. So now it looks like a new Toyota Supra Concept is heading for next month’s Detroit Auto Show.
Aston Martin's Vantage receives upgrades for 2012, with the base Vantage V8 getting the most attention. The Vantage V8 retains the 4.7-liter, 420-hp V8 and six-speed manual as standard equipment, but it now will be offered with the optional seven-speed Sportshift II from the Vantage S. The automatic transmission has closer ratios, a lower final drive ratio and quicker shifts than the previous Sportshift unit.
Mercedes-Benz's struggling Smart city car division is seeking to add a new dimension to the urban driving experience with its third-generation ForTwo, currently undergoing the final phase of a three-year test and development program ahead of a planned unveiling mid next year. Set for North American launch in 2015, the ultra-compact two-seat hatchback represents a fresh chapter in operations for Smart, which has recently gained greater independence from parent company Mercedes-Benz as its boss, Annette Winkler, attempts to stem years of financial losses after almost a decade of rebuilding following its short-lived joint venture with Mitsubishi. The new ForTwo, known internally as project C453, has been developed in a joint engineering program with the upcoming second-generation ForFour and its sister car, the third-generation Renault Twingo.
